# Plans & pricing

> What's free, what's included in each plan, and how to get a discount.

## Overview

You never pay to *see* civic data. You pay to *work with* it professionally.

Browsing, searching, and reading the Atlas directory is free for everyone, forever. Paid plans unlock professional research tools, API access, and team collaboration.

Atlas follows a simple funding rule: if Atlas supports paid work for you or your
organization, you should pay for that use. That revenue keeps the public
directory open and keeps short-term projects, small civic groups, independent
journalists, and public-interest researchers from being locked out.

That means the public map stays free, individuals get low-friction Pro and
Research Pass options, and funded teams pay the Team rate for shared
administration, SSO, and SCIM.

## Plans in detail

### Free

For anyone curious about civic work in their community.

Browse and search the full Atlas directory. Run up to 2 research runs per month. Save one shortlist with up to 25 entries. Use the public API at 30 reads per minute, 10 writes per minute, and 120 total requests per hour.

No sign-up required to browse. Create an account to save shortlists and run research.

### Atlas Pro — \$5/month

For individual researchers who need a professional workspace.

Everything in Free, plus:

* **Unlimited research runs** — no monthly cap
* **Unlimited shortlists and notes** — organize your research however you want
* **CSV and JSON export** — take your data with you
* **1 API key** with 1,000 requests per day
* **MCP and OAuth access** — connect Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and other AI assistants

Annual billing: **\$48/year** (2 months free).

### Atlas Team — $25/month base + $8/seat

For newsrooms, nonprofits, and research teams who need to coordinate.

Everything in Pro, plus:

* **Shared workspace** — collaborative shortlists and notes across your team
* **Unlimited API keys** with 10,000 requests per day per key
* **Watchlists and monitoring digests** — track new entries matching your criteria
* **SSO (SAML / OIDC) and SCIM** — managed sign-in and user provisioning
* **Up to 50 members**
* **Priority support**

The base price covers the workspace. Each member beyond the first is one seat. Annual billing: **$250/year base + $80/seat/year**.

### Atlas Research Pass

For short-term projects that need Team-level individual access without a subscription.

* **30-day pass**: \$9 one-time
* **7-day pass**: \$4 one-time

Grants Team-level quotas for one person for the pass duration: unlimited research, unlimited shortlists and notes, export, MCP/OAuth, watchlists, unlimited API keys, and 10,000 requests per day per key. It does not include shared seats, SSO, or SCIM. When it expires, your workspace reverts to Free. Shortlists, notes, and saved research remain accessible read-only until you subscribe or buy another pass.

<Tip>
  If you know you'll need individual access for more than a month and do not
  need Team-level quotas, Atlas Pro at \$5/month is more cost-effective than
  buying passes.
</Tip>

## Discounts

Atlas offers verified discounts for individual Pro access:

* **Students** — \$12.80 every four months after verification, equivalent to 80%
  of annual Pro split into three payments per year
* **Independent creators and journalists** — 50% off Pro monthly or annual
  billing
* **Grassroots nonprofits** — 40% off Pro monthly or annual billing
* **Civic tech workers** — 50% off Pro monthly or annual billing

Team pricing is the same for every organization. If a workspace needs shared
seats, SSO, or SCIM, it should use Atlas Team rather than an individual
discount.

### How to apply

Visit the [discount request page](https://atlas.rebuildingus.org/request-discount)
from your Atlas account.

The request has three steps:

1. **Choose** the discount category that matches you.
2. **Verify** with the requested details.
3. **Review** your request before submitting it.

Students provide a school email plus the school, program, college, fellowship,
or training program name. Independent creators and journalists provide a
portfolio, author page, byline page, or published-work link. Grassroots
nonprofits and civic tech workers provide the requested organization or work
details.

Atlas reviews discount requests manually and emails the decision. Approved
student discounts use the four-month Pro price, then apply the student coupon
for a final charge of **\$12.80 every four months**. Approved independent creator
and journalist discounts apply **50% off** Pro monthly or annual billing.
